This article was fantastic! Thoroughly enjoyed hearing their perspective. I remember the Sage/T-Jack "competition" well. I was studying for my CPA exam that summer. Then Favre flew in and I think I was glued to the live coverage for 3 hours that morning. It did feel like Sage was getting the shaft even pre-Favre.

Just went down a rabbit hole figuring out what Brad Johnson is doing these days.

Great article..

I think the big problem for JJM was he looked pretty decent in practice (from your reports) but then he did not live up to that in the games (well until later in the season). So a tie would likely go to Murray. At least that is my guess.

Yep. We know that JJMC can stay healthy in practice, and that he can look good to great in practice. The most optimistic moment last season was after the second joint practice with NE.

We know that JJMC can't stay healthy in games, and that in those games he managed to play, he melts down. It's possible those critical flaws improve, but there isn't anything that can happen outside of games that would be a reliable indicator change has occurred.

I would say there is a lot we don`t know about JJM. For many QBs the light finally comes on after a season or 2.

1. JJM (with a bit more experience of wisdom) might stay healthy.

2. With a full full season of practice, maybe this time good practice leads to good games

3. I think the injury (knee ) set him back a lot. And then the huge weight loss followed by regaining the weight. You look fine, but you are still not 100% for a while

If he was as a good or better than Wentz in practice (and KM was not on the team) ) would take the risk

However, with KM on the team, unless KM is a disaster in practice (which I doubt will happen) or injured, you got to go with KM.

My point is we really don`t know how much JJM can improve in a game situation without actual games

Agreed that the issue is circular: he can't show improvement in games without playing in games. But, aside from an injury, there isn't an obvious path to his earning the chance to be in games, either.

JJMC might stay healthy going forward, but are there examples of other qbs who missed games with 4 unrelated injuries in that short a stretch, and then did stay healthy? Anytime the hope is that something unprecedented happens, the odds ain't great.

The injuries seem unrelated (physically) to each other and are not degenerative. Some of it probably is from his play style and that he probably learns when to not get killed.

KOC is relentlessly positive in his public comments, but that doesn't mean there is an actual competition. It doesn't make sense that Murray would have come here without considerable assurance that he's going to be QB1.

We know that Indiana Jones left for less money because he didn't think he'd have a chance to play. Money was moot in Murray's decision, so unless he and his agent are naive and were lied to, which seems unlikely, he's going to be the guy.

The real battle might be who is QB2 in week 1.

I think it is a competition... With JJM having to run 100 yards and KM starting at the 25 yard line. JJM might win, but it is a loaded competition.

I love hearing these guys talk about their past experiences! Reading this article really has got me excited to see how this whole competition plays out! Great read!
