He doesn’t want a two year contract and I doubt we’ll be kicking down the door to a Super Bowl in that timeframe. I think he wants a ring. “I think it ultimately is about winning football games, and so that will be the most important thing, winning football games,” Cousins said. Bye bye...

IMO the Vikings will trade up to #3-5 before they have to sign Kirk. And then they won’t sign him.

It will be interesting to see the timing of any trade up. It seemed nuts when the 9ers traded up to no. 3 (especially at that price) without knowing who would be there. It seems clear who is going 1-2 this year, but trading up to 4 or 5 before the draft comes with significant risk.

Agreed about Cousins pointing to respect/being paid fairly as more important than what the money would allow him to buy. The unknown is what kind of market he'll have. If someone offers him $45MM/year guaranteed for two or three years, he's not staying for $30MM a year. If his best offer elsewhere is in the low $30s, maybe he does.

I think one important comment Kirk slipped in when asked was that he would let the team do their job and his agent do his job. That means there will be no discount. Money=respect more than it equals the money itself.

Avoiding big ticket UFA signings is a feature, not a bug. There are occasional exceptions where it actually works--Reggie White--but there is a much better track record drafting well and resigning one's own stars. *cough* Danielle Hunter *cough* The biggest problem with the Spielman era was spending capital illogically, on players who didn't make game changing plays (Barr) and extensions that didn't make sense given the positional aging curve.

The critical thing that needs to change is kicking cap hits down the road.

Congratulations to Brian O’Neill with the most hyperbolic comment of the week. You’d rather play with Cousins over the likes of Mahomes and Allen? Sure buddy.

The Vikings Achilles heel isn’t Cousins. Hometown discount? He’s on the downslope of his career, extend him a reasonable offer, if he declines it move on.

I’m not enamored with the man, he has displayed quite a bit of selfishness, it’s not personal it’s business. We as football freaks need constant reminders of this.

Matthew - mailbag question. If you were the gm, what would Kirk’s next contract have to look like for you to consider it a good idea to bring him back?
