Awesome article. Love the physics diagram. Feels like we never got the full Kyler hype cycle during camp because there was only a day or two in there where people said he looked amazing, but like Coller has pointed out many times, the camp performances aren’t always indicative of what we’ll see during the season. Hoping we see enough out of Kyler the first few weeks to crank up that hype wagon.

No quibbles with the calculations. But, Mahomes is 6'2". So, is the flight time on that throw ~1.05 seconds vs 1.09 for a guy who is 5'10"? That's really, really fast and seems to be moot compared to how long it takes a guy to process where to throw and how quick his release is.

Great article. I love the insight. I am going to start out the year with high hopes lol.

This was a really great article. Having never played the game myself, it's the first time it clicked that the whole "footwork" conversation is about the progression of steps as you go through the reads. If you don't have the pattern right, your feet wont be in the right spot to make the throw. Your explanation of trajectory and timing also kind of explains why perhaps JJ struggles more without the "touch". I understood it was needed, but not the mechanics behind it. Thanks!

Thanks! You're exactly right on the footwork

Anticipation & trust, much like Young

And really, that's required for every good QB. No-one can wait to see a WR come open on a 20+ yard crossing route or deep out and only *then* make the throw. JJ is sublime, but as he gets open the ball needs to arrive on-time.

The height thing is funny--5'10" is suboptimal. Still, until Herbert and Lawrence, 6'5" was the hard cap for good QBs (they're 6'6" and received tier 3 votes in Sando's poll, so maybe the cap hasn't moved).

Elway is 6'3" and that seemed to work out pretty well for everybody outside of Cleveland, but that means his eye level is what, ~5'11"? That precludes seeing over a 6'6" Gary Zimmerman, or a typical DE. Without wandering onto a physicist's corner, ball flight is seemingly a different issue than sight lines, which I'm pretty sure do not bend, and every QB needs to manage.

So, there may a play/game where the ball goes off O'Neill's helmet or Hutchinson bats a pass, and we all groan. But, Murray has the physical talent to be a top ten pick in two sports and has already had NFL success. He's never been in a situation this conducive to success. It's going to be really interesting to see what he does with it.
