Can you touch on what this years Vikings free agents might get in compensatory picks? Beyond Harris and Wilson I’m not sure who’d even qualify since Reiff, Barr and the like are under contract in 2021.
Reiff/Barr wouldn't qualify, Harris and Wilson would. It'll depend on how much they get paid. So I wouldn't expect a 3rd rounder for either Harris or Wilson
I'll join other subscribers in saying you do a great job! You have a nice, casual competence about your site that makes me come back every day.
Now, my question: Understanding that the defense has the biggest holes; would it still make sense to draft a VERY good guard if one is available? Shoring up the offensive line with even one GOOD lineman would solve lots of problems.
Thank you so much Del, really glad to have you on board and happy new year.
It would definitely make sense to pick the best guard. There's two different ways of looking at this offseason: They can try to stock up on defense for the future or make the offense even better. They have the potential to have a top 5 offense, so it would a lot of sense to do everything in their power to get there and try to find some solid free agents to fill spots on defense. Pass protection on the inside was such a massive issue this year that it ruined a lot of opportunities to keep drives alive.
With that said, they also have to think of the future. Usually you draft for 2 years out and hope one or two players contribute right away. Would it be nice if they fixed the guard issue long term? Definitely. Especially if they're sticking with Cousins.
I paid for an annual Purple Insider subscription just yesterday and your responses in this Mailbag post alone pretty much justify the whole expense. Thanks for your insights, Matthew! Looking forward to more.
Heyyyyyy that’s great to hear! We do this every week so feel free to drop a question in any of the comment sections or shoot me an email and I’ll do my best to include it. Glad to have you on board. This offseason is gonna be fascinating and I can’t wait to dive into it. Thanks so much for the support and have a happy new year!
Matthew, I think you do a great job. I listen to your podcasts all the time. On your podcasts and in interviews you ask great questions. Also love the guests you have on from PFF.
A thought for you. There is always negative and positive things going on with the Vikings. I would love to see you focus on the positive more frequently. It’s really easy to talk about the negative, especially during a year like this. And it’s your job to call things for what they are.
I’ve been a Viking fan for 50 years, season ticket holder, bleed purple, etc.
Would love to hear about the good stuff a little more often.
Thanks so much for the support Dam and happy New Year!
Two things: 1) When the team comes well short of expectations, there’s a lot less positives than negatives to discuss. There’s not much I can do about the performance on the field and the job is to be objective and honest about it. 2) we just did an episode called “love to see it, hate to see it” where we talked about an equal amount of good and bad things haha so I’m trying the best I can
It’ll be a fascinating offseason and I’m excited about all the content and shows to come. Thanks again for being along for the ride!

The rest of the draft could be all defense
