This piece makes me think about a lot of things, including how rare and awesome it was to see Big Brad come out of nowhere off the bench after four years and start winning games in ‘96.
But this piece largely makes me think that KAM will put analytics to use and take a QB in the first round — wherever, however — but have him sit, for a time, behind a bridge guy they’ll sign after kissing off Kirko. The Ides of March can’t arrive fast enough.
The thing with football is how interconnected everything is. It's really hard to separate a college player's performance from everything around him, and it's really hard to allocate credit for success in the NFL. Mahomes and Brady are all-timers, but put them on the 2002 Texans and I suspect they look awful. It would be interesting to see Darnold get 10 starts in a top quartile situation.
QB matters the most, but is there anything suggesting NFL teams miss any less often at other positions? The Jets traded up to take Vera-Tucker while the Vikings traded down and got stuck with. . .Darrisaw. JJ was the 5th WR taken, Lamb was the 3rd. Okudah and CJ Henderson were top ten picks. and can't cover a table with a cloth. Michel and Penny were taken ahead of Chubb. It's a mess everywhere.
Mmm, we know Kirk *could* play. I don't think anyone knows if Kirk can play at age 36 coming off the Achilles, to say nothing of at age 37+. It's a much different assessment now than it was with his previous two contracts.
One of your best ever. Loved the range of prospective.
Excellent article!
Really fantastic article that perfectly captures the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ emoji when it comes to evaluating quarterbacks.

One year guaranteed tops with Kirk. Nothing more than that. Hopefully they get lucky at pick number 10.

Great article. Nobody knows, especially Kwesi. Kwesi knows Kirk can play, but so does the GM in Atlanta. The next three weeks will be interesting.
“Especially Kwesi?” Really?
