It’s all well and good for him to sit if he’s not healthy, but once he gets there, we can absolutely not have any hesitation in playing him. There can’t be excuses of hey this team is too good or that matchup is bad. Reps matter in live game action as well.
If they felt good enough about McCarthy’s fundamentals and ability to run the offense to pass on Darnold, Rodgers, and Jones (assuming they could’ve signed him with a commitment to start him), then I would hope we are just talking about a week or two to make sure he is fully healed and focusing on some of the fundamentals he let slip when the bullets started flying. If he needs more than that, it is what it is and they should absolutely do it, but I won’t be able to help myself from complaining about them letting Darnold walk, especially when they spent a lot of that money on past their prime guys who aren’t doing a whole lot at the moment.
thanks Matthew, this is super reasonable -- a breath of fresh air in a moment where there's so much catastrophizing and drama in the fanbase and some media about JJ's future
just a side note -- you often use "QB rating" as the label for "passer rating". QBR ("QB Rating") is ESPN's stat where anything over 50 is above average, while passer rating is the longtime NFL stat with an average these days well over 90. Bo Nix would have been off to a great start, not a slow start, with a QBR of 74. There's also a distinction between the 2 stats in that QBR includes rushing while passer rating doesn't, along with some other smaller differences (air yards, situational performance, etc).
THIS right here is why I subscribe to Matthew. Sound, reasonable thinking without being a "homer". I just wonder how much fan hand-wringing is due to fantasy leagues and betting instead of looking at the whole picture.
NO fan, maybe even a few coaches, knows more about quarterbacks than KOC. I'll trust him.
I agree, as much as I wish JJ could step in and be spectacular, you have a season to deal with from a team standpoint. Cant throw it all away. That said, there was a lot of ‘blessing in disguise’ talk about his knee and statements such that this isn’t his ‘rookie year,’ but it’s quite clear JJ needs many reps at this level. He missed out on a lot of footwork and touch pass reps that clearly aren’t solidified yet.
As much as I want to see him play, I'd hate to see him come out again or against Atlanta, unprepared and taking bad hits and reinforcing bad habits and needlessly exposing himself to injury. I see his talent, and JJ and KO are going to be here for a long time. Perfect spot to take a step back and reinforce good habits.

Maybe he will be good, maybe he won’t. But one thing these other qbs are showing is availability which he has yet to prove he has.
