More data to reinforce Matthew’s point on Turner’s usage relative to others and to his role, which I think a couple experts (Nate Tice?) noted around the draft could be more or less “Van Ginkel Junior”, a Swiss Army knife type. That bears out when you look at the Pass Rush Attempts versus Coverage Drops for these players as he’s far closer to Van Ginkel than anyone else. I threw Watt and Hunter in as a great pass rushers in the league, and their drops into coverage are miniscule.

Pass rush attempts to Coverage drops for the following and percentage* comparison.

Verse: 362 rushes to 28 drops – 7.7%

Latu: 294 to 6 – 2.0%

Robinson: 250 to 34 – 13.6%

Turner: 103 to 37 – 35.9%

Van Ginkel: 316 to 166 – 52.5%

Greenard: 432 to 53 – 12.2%

Patrick Jones: 277 to 30 – 10.8%

Hunter: 414 to 4(!) – 5.3% - 0.9%

TJ Watt: 448 to 24 – 5.3%

*I cheated here and took the number of drops divided by rushes, but you get the idea.

Again with the numbers reinforcement, both Greenard and Van Ginkel’s snap counts are over 700, which is staggeringly high and puts them third and fourth in the entire league. No wonder they’re starting to look worn down. They are. (This reminds me of Zimmer pounding Griffen and Hunter endlessly, though I think Flores would play Turner far more if he felt he was ready.) I love the 20, 30, 49 and 52 yard pass plays to Addison and Jefferson, but a few more of those marathon Jones and Akers run-oriented drives like the one at the end of last week—you love to see it. Not just to shorten the game, but to give the defense a break.

PS – I’m realizing I research and write this for my own benefit. From what I can see after being a subscriber for a few weeks, there are very few people in this community. It’s good because you don’t get the inane takes like on The Athletic, but it’s bad because you barely get any takes at all.

Is that new XFL defensive lineman a potential John Randel look alike?
