Since the end of the year, this has been handled really, really well. The QB room needed upgrading--which is much easier said than done--and it was, for peanuts no less. Murray has the best chance of his career to shine, at a point when his career is at a huge fork in the road. We'll see what he does with the opportunity.

Moving on from Darnold didn't work out, to put it mildly. But, some of us are old enough to remember the '99 Vikings. They actually won a playoff game, before getting crunched by the Greatest Show on Turf. Moss and Carter had 1400/11 and 1200/13 (and when the passing rules were much different). The team still moved on from its nomadic veteran QB coming off a career year (and again, an actual playoff win) for the guy who was drafted 11th overall. The 2000 Vikes were in the NFC game.

It's too bad that JJMC isn't a starting NFL QB, but drafting is really hard. It's a very good thing that the team accepted reality and acted accordingly, rather than deluding itself.

As surprising as the end of a marvel movie

It would be the most Viking’s thing ever for Murray to now tear his ACL the week before the season starts and McCarthy comes out of nowhere to throw for 4,400 yards and 30 tds.

Hope the kid takes the long view on this situation and makes the most of it. That can be hard when you are 23. Let’s hope he makes that his choice.

I’m glad they made the choice this soon. I mean Kyler was the favorite based on track record but letting JJ know he had to fight to keep his job will be good for his development and he had his shot. I hope he keeps his head down and keeps working at it. I’d love it if he could develop and we finally have a long term answer but it’s at least 2 years away. The lack of a true long term franchise QB has to be reason #1 we are the winningest franchise in history without a superbowl win.

I’m most happy that now we can finally spend more than an obligatory 5-10 mins of the podcasts on other positions. Matthew, you’ve done better than other shows at this but I’m hungry for more 😊. I really want to hear a lot more about how the other players are looking.

I think McCarthy will stay and I honestly expect him to play at some point this year. I hope Murray is good but I'm a little concerned about the QB position right now either way

They should just keep him as long he is not going to just completely refuse to stick around. And he shouldn’t. Sticking around would be the best thing for him, in my opinion.

I'm only surprised by how soon this was announced. I thought it would drag on past the first preseason game.

The numbers on the baseline qb play really puts things into perspective. 31-9 is pretty darn good.
