It’s not the performance—though that’s deeply problematic. It’s that he cannot stay healthy.
There is no reason not to have him on the roster for the rest of his K, the remaining money is the minimum each year. But there needs to be someone who is physically capable of playing qb in the nfl, and alas, JJMC ain’t it.
Of all my years of watching this team all the way back to Fran Tarkenton's 2nd stint I've never been so miserable about a season. I'm 💯 over this McCarthy experiment and ready to move on. Somewhere there's got to be a better option.
It’s been really, really bad, and they don’t have any good options. They should be looking at everything from the draft to a huge trade, but we’re probably going to be stuck with JJ and somebody else in the Wentz to Kyler Murray range. I would still be on board with Malik Willis, even with the Matt Flynn sample size and the likelihood that he will need a multi year deal for a decent amount of cash. If that means moving on from JJ and drafting another guy behind Malik, so be it. I’d prefer another bold move that blows up in their face to just sitting on their hands and praying JJ figures it out, because like Coller just went over, the odds of that happening based on how bad he’s been are just not high enough.
Matthew, I've really appreciated your ability to see the forest through the trees with JJ's performance. In talking to fellow fans or reading others' assessments, it's a lot of, "Look at this throw, look at that throw," or focusing on his ok record as a starter and youth, or somehow getting caught up in Josh Allen comparisons. As you lay out in stark detail, it's been really bad, and there's been very little in the eye test that makes me think it will get better. Nearly every play, even the successful ones, look like they could be a potential disaster. He doesn't look like a competent NFL-level QB, from his stature (no way he's as big as his reported height/weight) to his timing to his mechanics to how the ball arrives. And his propensity to run himself into injury makes all of it that much worse.
After watching JJ and Brosmer cosplay as NFL QBs, I'm to the point where I would be fine with them bringing back Kirk for a last hurrah and competition with JJ (which he would easily win) and then looking to the class of '27.
Let me McPonder the Vikings QB situation, it appears McFragile. I’d rather the coaching staff found a QB2 and ran it back with QB1. If he’s McUnderwhelming, McClean house next year.

The funny thing is I get it. All of the decisions that didn't work. But I think a humbling season will do everyone good.

I hope he can figure out his issues though.
