The 1999 game was a classic experience for me. My wife and I were staying at the Hilton hotel which was the Vikings game day hotel in 1999. Met Denny Green's brother in the exercise room. Sat next to Red McCombs and his family in the restaurant and saw a man with a large golden chain neckless draped around his neck in the hotel lobby. Evander Holyfield, a diehard Falcon fan. Jesse Ventura was holding a big victory celebration across the street the night before the game. Lots of excitement. The game was exciting too, we were on our feet nearly the whole game, but DAMN it didn't end well. The next morning upon leaving for home we rode down the hotel elevator with Denny Green. Denny wasn't happy as you might expect.
I hate to be "that guy" but when that episode came out I was delighted by the reference but couldn't help but think that even though it happened in the year 1999 it was technically the 1998 NFC Championship Game. (Pushes nerd glasses up on nose.)
Not sure what this says about me as a fan or a user of social media, but I’ve never seen an episode of this show or even this famous gif until now. But this is a super fun story. “Think of things from your own life like your favorite aunt dying or your house burning down, this was a little worse.” This might be the greatest Vikings fan quote ever.

Great article, Matthew. Thanks!
I became a die hard Viking fan in 1970. All I can say is… DAMN!
