“But the Vikings need to make that decision based on cost, projected performance, roster building and the chances they can turn a “competitive rebuild” club into a Super Bowl contender.” Spot on. Keep planning long term.
San Francisco has a $870K QB which allows them to field Bosa, Samuel, Kittlle, the leading rusher in the NFL, The best middle linebacker and the best offensive right tackle. Aiyuck, like JJ is up for a big payday. How will the 49r's continue to do this? They probably will fall short of winning the big prize this year. Next year will continue to be a challenge. The salary cap will make it really difficult. The Vikings need some good decisions by their top brass and also some good luck to be competitive.
When I watch the games this year, I don’t think, boy, if only they had Kirk.
I think: Damn, imagine Michael Penix Jr. in this offense to go with a defense that has some higher-end free-agent upgrades.
You cannot convince me this head coach and front office — in Year 3, led by a polymath — would prefer an aging, recently injured, very expensive, previously and historically quite limited QB instead of wanting to draft “their” guy at the most important position in sports.
I’m definitely concerned they will show Kirk the money. But I’m just as concerned what we will look like without him. I’m also concerned about Q’s penchant to pass over blue chippers in the draft. We are always grabbing the undersized reach. Hamilton was a no brainer, this dynamic feels like purgatory for another five years. Even though I like our new culture and front office. But the numbers and their tendencies have “not for another five years” written all over it.
Being a playoff team gives them a 20th at best draft pick. 7-10 gives them the potential for a top 10 pick? How is this even a decision? I am soooo tired of a divisionally competitive team who can't get past one or two playoff games. So. Tired. They've always been good enough but never the best. I agree with all the other commenters here. Any attempts to win the last couple of games is delusional. Everyone is injured. Just take it on the chin and set yourselves up for drafting then go get your guy. Simple.
I should add... bringing back Cousins is fine as long as it's a short term, team friendly deal. The second they pay him "market" (whatever that is for a 36yo newly injured QB is), as is their normal way, they've lost me. I love Cousins. I just don't want to pay him.
Great article Mathew. There's absolutely no way if PFF is correct they should pay Cousins a 40 million a year with Hunter JJ Darrisaw coming doubt they can pay all 4. They've got a lot of tough decisions to make in the offseason and QB is just 1 of them.

Preach, Matthew.

Well said!
